For immediate release: hot on the heels of IDW’s successful re-launch, Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta’s science fiction classic comes to the world of audio theatre as the AudioComics Company announces its debut production: Starstruck. The audio adaptation of the original off-Broadway production, adapted for the medium of audio by co-creator Elaine Lee, and directed by AudioComics co-founder William Dufris, will record at The Studio in Portland, ME May 7 – 9 in conjunction with Portland’s WMPG Community Radio for a fall release on compact disc and pay-per-MP3 download, and for airings on selected radio stations in the United States.
The basis for the comic book series, Starstruck was first presented off-Broadway in 1980, and again in 1983. In a far-flung and very alternative future, Captain Galatia 9 and the crew of the Harpy are on a mission for the United Federation of Female Freedom Fighters. When the Harpy runs into a living ship inhabited by a team of galactic evildoers, including Galatia’s insidious sister Verloona Ti, the outcome of the battle may well decide the fate of the free universe. Often hilarious, always surprising, Starstruck is a spine-tingling joy-ride to the far side of the spiral arm!
The off-Broadway production received a special audio-drama style reading at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, CA in August of 2009 with funds raised benefitting comic book legend Gene Colan. Using the rough recording of the reading as a guideline, Lee and the AudioComics Company worked out the changes necessary for the piece to work for the aural medium. Ms. Lee will be AudioComics’ guest for the week, attending both rehearsals and voice-over sessions. The post-production will also employ Dwight Dixon’s re-recorded music from the original 1980’s productions.
The cast features voice-over performers whose credits range from Shakespere to Seinfeld. Of note is that Denise Poirier, the voice of MTV’s Æon Flux will portray the villainous Verloona Ti, while noted audio book narrators Tavia Gilbert, and Simon Vance are also on board:
Galatia 9: Tavia Gilbert
Brucilla the Muscle: Jennywren Sanders
Erotica Ann 333: Kristina Balbo
Sister Bronwyn: Genevieve Casagrande
Eeeluh: Charly Duley
Verloona: Denise Poirier
Rah-El Rex: James Herrera
Kalif Bajar: Brent Askari
Dwannyun and Orga the Killer Cyborg: William Dufris
The voice of NORM : Lance Roger Axt
The voice of EVIE: Christine Marshall
Gyndal Q: Evadne Bryan-Perkins
Announcer: Simon Vance
Rootersnoos Ferret, Jimmy the Snout: Brennan Lee Mulligan
This only marks the tip of the iceberg for Galatia, Bru the Muscle, Erotica Ann, Verloona, and the House of Bajar: in addition to a deluxe trade paperback of the IDW series and a new production of the play in Florida, Elaine Lee will begin work with the AudioComics Company in 2011 on two spin-off Starstruck audio theatre series: a world-premiere “prequel” series, the stories of which take place between the events of the comics and the play, and an all-ages series of short audio plays featuring the Galactic Girl Guides.
The suggested retail price (SRP) for the forthcoming two-disc CD of Starstruck is $22.95, and $12.95 for pay-per-MP3 download. Starstruck will also be available through iTunes.
